At the risk of you being frustrated even more ;-) have you read Technopoly by Neil Postman, which is a rather old book but excellent on the subject of tech hype — that culturally we embrace the pros and ignore the cons of any new technology (and the cons can be very serious). His point is that it’s pretty much impossible to stop the new tech but it’s our responsibility to discuss the cons and act to mitigate them even if that’s a very counter-cultural view. The cloud has some very serious potential cons in terms of efficiency (buying new machines has little time cost) so we have to mitigate that by being aware of it and doing anything we can to make it better. The cloud can actually be v efficient, but it could also be awful.
